Before and After Restoration - a 15' Correct Craft

Restorations of Fay and Bowen Torpedo Launches

Fay and Bowen Aft covering boards being steam bent on a form, and then resawn and installed. It would take a 14" to 16" wide board the saw these out, and they would be much weaker due to grain run out across the piece.

A large white oak coaming for the front of a Fay and Bowen standard launch. The material grain selection is critical if you want the coaming to remain flat. To much curvature in the growth rings seen in the end of the plank will result in the plank coming out of the steam box cupped. The rule of thumb is that when the wood is subjected to steam, the grain displayed in the growth rings will try and straighten out. You should either pick flat grain (growth rings at the end parallel to the width) or vertical grain (growth rings at the end parallel to the sides), or as close to either of these as you can find.

A brand new Fay and Bowen white oak bulkhead with hatch. We had molding cutters profiled from the original molding. The center panels are brass pinned into the outside cheek pieces against the hull so the entire middle section can be lifted out by moving one latch. No screws into the panel faces!

The restored 1912 Kermath 2 cylinder, 12 hp four stroke going into one of the 26' F&B launches.

Fay and Bowen seat panels and the toolbox panel being fitted to the legs and seat riser.

This is a fiberglassed hull - traditional planked hull with two layers of 6 oz. cloth set in epoxy. Much time goes into filling and fairing,
and the final result is as close as a wood boat gets to being a fiberglass hull.

his is a traditionally planked and caulked hull in primer. No fiberglass, no epoxy saturation - just well faired, sealed and primed. This
also takes a lot of time, mostly because each layer of material has a dry time that can take days. There is more than 100 man hours in the finish work for this 26' hull, to this point. You get what you pay for!
