This is a 28’ custom-built, mahogany-planked, chauffer-driven fishing boat was ordered by Mrs. Julia Tallman of Delaware and Dewey Island in 1930 from Fitzgerald and Lee. The boat was berthed on Dewey Island, just opposite Alexandria Bay, NY from 1930 until 1950. It was similar to other Thousand Island area social/fishing launches of its day built by Hutchinson and Andrew Duclon. It differs from most in that it was planked smooth-skinned instead of lapstrake, and has a large two cockpit layout with separating roll-up window that gave the hull a unique opulence afforded by people like Mrs. Tallman, who was the chairperson of the republican party for the state of Delaware. The launch was christened “Chip” and serviced Mrs. Tallmans visiting political friends for years. In 1952, Mrs. Tallman sold the Dewey Island estate and Chip to Allen C. Ray, whose family used the boat until they sold the property in 1984. The boat was renamed Kimberly around 1984 and was featured in Bob Speltz “The Real Runabouts, Volume V” on page 145. It went to Hutchinson Boat Works in Alexandria Bay and sat there for a couple of years before it was sold, then in the early 1990’s it was offered for sale at Steen Melby Boat Restoration in Blue Point, NY where the large color photos were taken. It finally ended up at Forestport Boat Works with Parker Snead in upstate NY in 1998. It was purchased from Forestport by Steve Lindo of NJ., who brought it to our shop for a survey and restoration. While at our shop, the Dick Sooy 280-class three-point hydroplane “Vagabond” caught Steve’s eye and the Kimberly was traded toward Vagabond and its restoration. She is in very original condition, and has never had any major restoration work. She is powered by a 1959 straight-six Norseman engine with a 2:1 reduction gear. She has a round-bilged, broad hull with a lot of freeboard, well suited for large lakes and coastal waters. She will comfortably seat 10 adults. We are offering her for sale as a restoration project for
